A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Thursday at 10:30 a.m. to officially open the Northwest North Carolina Visitor Center/ Rest Area, the state's first "green" rest area.

It offers many unique features that increase energy efficiency, conserve water and reduce greenhouse gases. Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the public is invited to tour the facility and discuss its "green" technology with the building's architect and contractor, as well as engineers from the N.C. Department of Transportation.

The rest area is located on U.S. Highway 421 northbound, a half-mile from Exit 282 (Highway 115). Free parking is available.
