The Statesville Convention and Visitors Bureau is seeking volunteers to help to put the city's best foot forward for the overnight stop of the Cycle North Carolina "Mountains to the Coast" tour.
More than 1,100 cyclists and their families are expected to spin through Statesville on Sept. 28.
"I think we have just about everything in place," said Greta Lint, the SCVB's interim project leader. "I feel really good about it."
The SCVB needs volunteers to work in the welcome tent at Fairview Baptist Church, to play shuttle host for one of the six shuttles escorting people about town, to monitor the water stop at Food Lion on Old Mountain Road and act as a cheering section welcoming riders into town.
A sign has already been set up by the N.C. Department of Transportation on U.S. Highway 21 cautioning motorists about the presence of the riders.
Starting in Blowing Rock and ending in Surf City, the ride is designed to expose bicyclists from around the country to some of North Carolina's sites and several small communities. Riders are coming in from Alabama, California, Georgia, South Carolina, Vermont and Ontario, Canada.
The riders who are spending the night of Sept. 28 in Statesville will travel the back roads in Alexander and Iredell counties from Lenoir.
In honor of the event, Statesville has arranged a concert for that night.
Lint said she is meeting with city police to iron out some last-minute details and trying to locate trash cans for the visitors.
While most of the cyclists will be camping at the church, some will be staying at the Sleep Inn, the new Holiday Inn Express and the Days Inn.
Lint said the event could lead to more tourism in Statesville. Historically, cyclists have taken their families back to visit communities they've enjoyed, she said.
"It's an economic boon for a community," Lint said.
