It's not as controversial, divisive or as long as the health care reform legislation being debated in Congress. But the Statesville Downtown & N.C. 115 Streetscape/Land Use Master Plan being considered by the Statesville City Council is a pretty big deal.
First of all, if adopted, the document will dramatically change the vision for our downtown.
Second, its estimated cost, before interest payments, is a whopping $28 million.
That's a good chunk of change and many people will, no doubt, say that's too much money and not give it a second thought.
That would be a short-sighted approach. The debate shouldn't rest solely on the cost.
As city officials have pointed out, much of the infrastructure work outlined in the plan will have to be done regardless of whether this comprehensive vision is adopted and pursued.
If you care about the long-term survival of our downtown, or if you have always wished for a more vibrant shopping district, please read the report and let the city council and mayor know what you think about the recommendations - and the price tag.
We've posted the plan online.
Read it carefully and then lend your voice to the ongoing discussion about the future of our downtown.
