An Iredell County judge and jury made a simple yet profound statement on Friday: If you peddle drugs in this county and one of your customers overdoses and dies, you should be prepared to spend a long, long time in prison.
After a jury found Joshua Parlee guilty of murder in the overdose death of 15-year-old Micael Lane, Superior Court Judge Joe Crosswhite put some teeth in the verdict, ordering Parlee to serve 17-22 years in prison.
Parlee sold a prescription painkiller, which he obtained from his mother, to Lake the night before he died.
One of the primary purposes behind sentencing in criminal cases is to deter others from engaging in criminal activity.
While the state's sentencing guidelines typically fall short in this regard, the sentence handed down in this case was just and reasonable.
Let's hope the rest of the drug dealers in our community take notice.
