Deborah Cagle of Hickory was going to use some spare change for a car wash but decided to buy a "Carolina Cash 5" ticket for the Sept. 12 drawing instead. That decision paid off when her ticket matched all five numbers drawn to win the $178,887 top prize.
A few days after the drawing, Cagle says she saw a sign at the Cubbard Express on Northeast 16th Street—where she'd originally bought the ticket—that said the $178,887 winning ticket had been sold there. Cagle, who had played her own numbers, recognized the winning numbers and exclaimed, "Those are my numbers!"
Cagle says she plans to use her winnings, which were $121,643.48 after taxes, to buy a house and maybe take a trip to Disneyland.
