Oh, the things that children can learn

We're two weeks in, and this mom is loving kindergarten.

My child is one of those who has always been too busy running around and bouncing off the walls (literally) to sit down and read a story or make a puzzle. So I sent him off to school feeling like he wasn't prepared for what they'd want him to know.

What I've realized is, sometimes it just takes the right teacher. Every afternoon, Ben jumps out of our carpool's van, bursting with news about what he learned that day. Did I know there were vowels and consonants? Did I know writing started on the lefthand side of the page? Did I know what "cómo está" means?

The kid is hooked on learning. He's begging me to read him stories. He's pulling out his brother's old notebooks to practice letters in the evening. For fun.

All I can say is — "Who is this child, and what have you done with Ben?"

Joking aside, it's been great to watch him be excited about school and absorb the world around him like a sponge. Kindergarten is a magical year, when they're still young anough to be amazed by everything and curious enough to want to learn more.

Or, as Ben would say, "Más! Más!'
