A Southern Pines man died and two others were seriously injured in a head-on collision Wednesday afternoon on N.C. Highway 901 near Allen Road, west of Harmony.

Ralph G. Houghton Jr., 78, of Southern Pines was killed in the crash, and a passenger in his Dodge minivan, Don Kennedy, also of Southern Pines, and the driver of the second vehicle, Rosalie G. Howard of Union Grove, were seriously injured.

Kennedy and Howard are both patients at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem late Wednesday.

Trooper Sammy Martin of the N.C. Highway Patrol said the crash occurred when Houghton's eastbound minivan crossed the centerline on N.C. 901 and hit Howard's Toyota 4-Runner head-on.

Houghton's van caught on fire after the crash.

North Iredell Rescue Squad officer David Cook said he and fellow squadsman Bobby Brown approached the scene and saw smoke, and when they arrived on the scene, flames were coming from the hood of the minivan. Brown grabbed a fire extinguisher and was able to knock down the flames, which were then totally extinguished by the Harmony Fire Department.

The crash closed N.C. 901 from just east of the scene to Tabor Road for more than an hour.
