It's time for the ninth annual Blues and Burritos Event, sponsored by Homesley, Goodman and Wingo, a Mooresville law firm that serves the Lake Norman area.

"The (first) festival happened to fall in September of 2001, and a week or two before the event, Sept. 11 happened," said Clifton Homesley. "Ever since then, fundraising and charity have been tied in."
Homesley said the firm pays for the cost of the event, including the band, food by Pueblo Grande and beer supplied by Carolina Beer and Beverage.

"That way, all of the proceeds from the donations people make during the event will go to the charities we've selected for the year," he said. "We've been with Health Reach for about three to four years and again this year, and we're also doing the Mooresville Soup Kitchen."

Charitable contributions to date have totaled around $40,000, he said.

Health Reach offers general medical, basic dental and chiropractic care for free to Mooresville, Troutman and Mount Mourne residents who are without insurance and who earn less than 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level.

The Soup Kitchen serves more than 20,000 meals annually to those in need.

Homesley said the firm never sets a goal for the fundraiser, but they typically get anywhere from $6,000 to $8,000.

"Donations to these organizations is especially important this year with the downturn in the economy," he said. "There are more people than ever that need to use their facilities and, because it's local, it really hits close to home. People really don't have the money for good health care and the soup kitchen helps a lot of residents through tough times and reduces their food expenses."

Homesley said the event attracts a diverse crowd from all parts of town.

"This event is fun for the whole family and we usually get about 1,000 people," he said.

On hand to entertain the crowd will be Mother Blues, a blues singer from New Orleans who came to North Carolina after Hurricane Katrina, and the Part Time Blues Band.
