Remembering 9/11

Published: September 11, 2009

Americans from all walks of life huddled around TVs and computer monitors eight years ago today, watching in disbelief as terrorists crashed airplanes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a rural community in Pennsylvania.

At first, we weren't quite sure what we were watching. Then we were horrified, overcome with grief and, finally, determined to take the fight to the terrorists across the globe. As a result of those attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people, American soldiers remain engaged in deadly conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

For most of us, our focus has largely shifted to matters closer to home as a result of a deep recession, double-digit unemployment and record home foreclosures.

Today, however, Americans will pause to remember the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001.

Mitchell Community College has taken the lead locally to ensure that we don't forget what happened on that date.

There's nothing fancy about the ceremony, which starts at 8:50 a.m. today on the MCC Circle. It is just a small gathering of people who want to remember the Americans who were killed in the attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia and offer a silent prayer for those who were lost and the loved ones they left behind. If you cannot attend the public ceremony, please take a few minutes this morning - wherever you are - to reflect on this national tragedy.
