A Mooresville High School club took third place in a national competition this summer.
The Health Occupations Students of America chapter's Public Service Announcement team advanced to the National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tenn., in June after winning first place at a state competition held earlier this year. The PSA team included 2009 alumna Portia Nleya, senior Genya Kalinina and junior Persia Homesley.
The team made a 30-second PSA promoting volunteering and had to present the video to a panel of judges. They placed third out of 38 teams.
Mooresville's HOSA chapter gained more national prominence as one of its own was elected to President Elect this summer.
Claire Lucas, a 2009 Mooresville graduate and four-year HOSA member, was elected as the National HOSA President Elect at the June conference. Lucas will now serve a two-year term, the first year as President Elect and the following year as National President.
Mooresville HOSA volunteered at the Lake Norman Excursion the past two summers as well as raised over $1,000 for Cystic Fibrosis by organizing a semi-formal dance for the school.
HOSA is an organization for students that are interested in a career in the medical field. Nationally, there are more than 100,000 members. HOSA offers leadership conferences, scholarships and competitive events at the regional, state and national levels. Students can choose from more than 50 medical related events to compete in against other HOSA chapters. Aside from competitive events the national conference offered medical symposiums, health care exhibits and opportunities to meet students from all over the nation with similar interests and career goals.
Each school chapter votes on officers and decides meeting dates. Generally, club advisors are Health Occupations teachers, but the students do most of the planning and organization. Most chapters meet once or twice a month after school and plan service projects, practice for competition, play games or talk about upcoming events.
