For the second time in recent weeks, firefighters in Iredell County were called to fight a blaze at the home of one of their own.

Central firefighter Mike Sloan and his family lost their home on Mountain View Road early Friday morning.

Sloan was asleep on the couch and his wife, Casey, was getting ready for the day Friday when the smoke detectors in the house sounded.

They didn't smell anything and didn't see any flames, but Sloan went outside to check things out.
That's when he noticed fire at the front of his truck, which was parked in the attached garage.
Sloan went back inside and called 911, and by that time, smoke was coming out of the garage door, said Iredell County Acting Fire Marshal Ronny Thompson.

Central, along with Wilkes-Iredell and Trinity fire departments, were dispatched to the scene, and one firefighter, who was at Phil's Food Mart near the scene, reported flames were coming through the roof, Thompson said.

The fire engulfed the attic, completely burning the roof off the house, Thompson said.
"It's a total loss," he said.

Thompson said the fire likely started in the area of the garage. There was a bonus room above the garage, and the fire gutted that room.

"There was an open stairwell from the garage to that room," Thompson said.

The Sloans were able to salvage a few belongings from their home, but not many, Thompson said.
Back in June, Troutman firefighters responded to the home of a fellow firefighter on East Monbo Road.
Donnie Clodfelter and his wife, Jackie, and their son, Adam, saw their home destroyed by flames.
Fellow firefighters stepped forward, as has the community.

Sloan said he's experiencing the same kind of support.

Many people, he said, who have heard about the fire offer up a handshake and pass money to Sloan to help him and his family through this time.

Firefighters are also reaching out to help a brother, dropping by to lend a hand with salvaging belongings.
