CHINA GROVE - The second of five interceptions by Carson's defense ended West Iredell's chance to take a lead into halftime, and the visiting Warriors fell 31-14 on Friday night.
C.J. Gibbs led West Iredell (4-6, 1-4) with seven catches for 74 yards. Backup quarterback Justin Hoppes, playing in relief of injured starter Sayer Robinson, threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Kamron Summers in the closing minutes.
"I've been here 23 years, and that is the poorest effort a football team has put forth in the last 10 years at our program," West Iredell coach Mark Weycker said. "I have to congratulate Carson. Their staff has worked real hard over the last four years."
West Iredell trailed 12-0 before Robinson scored on a 2-yard keeper with 3:02 remaining in the first half.
Bryson Shepherd made the extra point, and teammate Phillip Walls recovered an angled pooch kick at Carson's 42.
A personal foul on the Cougars following a third-down sack by Micah Honeycutt moved the ball inside Carson's 10, and the Warriors were facing another third down in the final minute of the half when Robinson threw to Shrine Bowl selection P.J. Clyburn cutting toward the middle of the field.
The ball tipped off his fingers, and Derrick Sewell's interception preserved the Cougars' lead.
"That was a pivotal factor right there," Weycker said. "It was just one of the monumental mass of mistakes that we made."
Sewell made his second interception in the first minute of the third quarter, and Cody Clanton's 32-yard touchdown catch gave Carson (6-5, 3-3) an 18-7 lead. Zack Gragg added a 1-yard sneak with 1:42 remaining in the quarter.
The period ended with Sewell picking off a pass for the third time.
