North Iredell's football team got a good sniff of its second win of the season and first win in the North Piedmont Conference last Friday, but the Raiders didn't get to taste victory.
And that saddened North coach Shannon Ashley, who felt his team was poised to beat rival Statesville in Greyhound Hollow.
Statesville's goal-line stand in the closing minute preserved a 14-12 win over the Raiders, who led 10-0 at halftime.
"We gave it all we had," Ashley said. "The kids played with a lot of heart. (Statesville) made more plays at the end of the ballgame than we did. My heart's broken for our kids, because I know how hard they worked all week in practice, and I know how much it meant to them."
The Raiders (1-8, 0-4 NPC) host East Rowan for homecoming tonight.
