Statesville city leaders are hopeful they will be able to come to a resolution with a man whose home, located in one of the city's historic districts, has fallen into disrepair.
At Thursday's city council pre-agenda meeting, Planning Director David Currier said Emmitt Scroggs is $3,800 in arrears on property taxes he owes to the city for his house at 621 W. Sharpe St.
Currier said the Iredell County Tax Department has notified Scroggs of the delinquency and that Scroggs has contacted the tax department to make arrangements to pay the back taxes.
Currier said the city also plans to work with the Statesville Housing Authority and other nonprofit housing organizations that might help Scroggs make needed repairs or provide a place to live in case Scroggs is forced to leave his house.
At Monday's regular meeting, the city council will consider adopting an ordinance condemning Scroggs' house as "unfit for human occupancy."
If the ordinance passes, Scroggs will have to "close and vacate" the house.
However, some council members said they would consider tabling the matter to give Scroggs time to find a solution regarding the house.
Also, Councilwoman Bonita Eisele said Thursday that a troop of Boy Scouts — who were in attendance at the last city council meeting when the matter was initially discussed — are willing to solicit donated materials to help Scroggs fix the house.
Also Thursday, the council bade farewell to City Clerk Mary Craddock, who is retiring after 20 years with the city.
"This will be Mary's last time with us," said Mayor Costi Kutteh. "I'm sad and I'll miss her as I'm sure everyone will. Mary has done as good a job as anyone I've worked with in my 20 years with the city. She has done a wonderful job and she leaves big shoes and hard shoes to fill."
Kutteh then thanked Craddock for her service to the city.
