For the second time in as many weeks, the Family Dollar store on West Front Street was robbed.
A lone gunman forced employees to the floor Thursday morning and took money from the safe and register, said Capt. Bill Riter of the Statesville Police Department.
On Oct. 19, two armed men robbed the store and struck an employee on the head. No one has been charged in that robbery.
At around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, the man entered the store, demanded that a customer leave the store, and then forced a clerk to the floor, Riter said.
He ordered her to open the safe, which she did. Riter said the suspect then ordered the manager to the floor and demanded she open the register.
After getting money from the register and safe, the suspect fled, apparently on foot.
He was described as a black male, 6 feet tall with a slim build. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans and covered his face with a bandanna. He was also wearing black and red tennis shoes.
Riter said the surveillance footage from the robbery did not capture a clear photo of the suspect.
Harmony woman charged with firing weapon near elementary school.
A Harmony woman was charged with firing a weapon near a school.
Mary Anne Heglar, 37, of Harmony was charged with disorderly conduct by shooting a gun on property adjacent to a school.
Sheriff Phil Redmond said Deputy Carl Adams answered a complaint about shots being fired Wednesday evening beside the soccer field at Harmony Elementary School.
Witnesses told Adams that while soccer practice was going on, a woman at the property next door fired four shots from a shotgun.
Adams learned that prior to the shooting, the suspect went to the school to retrieve a dog, and one of the coaches and some of the players helped her get the dog.
Witnesses told Adams that she went back home and started shooting, Redmond said.
Adams learned she didn't fire in the direction of the school, but those on the soccer field were disturbed by the firing of a weapon close to the school grounds.
Deputy Brad Stroud went to Heglar's home and found a shotgun inside the house, as well as three spent shotgun shells outside in a trash can, Redmond said.
Heglar was charged and the shotgun was seized for evidence.
Authorities seek information on rodeo belt buckle stolen from home
A championship rodeo belt buckle was stolen from a Mooresville-area home in September, and authorities are seeking information about its whereabouts.
The buckle, along with several other items, was stolen on Sept. 13 from the Johnson Dairy Road home of champion bull rider J.B. Mauney, said Detective Sgt. J.T. Smith of the Iredell County Sheriff's Office.
The theft occurred during a break-in at Mauney's home, Smith said.
Some of the stolen property has been recovered, and arrests for possession of stolen property were made. However, interviews with those arrested failed to turn up the buckle, Smith said.
Smith said it is believed the buckle is still in the hands of someone locally.
The buckle, the rodeo equivalent of an NFL Super Bowl ring, reads "2007 Challenge Tour Championship" and has Mauney's name on it.
Anyone with information can call Smith at (704) 660-9586.
