After tearing through the final nine holes Tuesday, Statesville's Kathryn Vance ended her high school career by firing a 95 at the 1A/2A/3A state championship.
Vance shook off a nine on a long par-5 to shoot five strokes better than Monday's opening round of 100 at Longleaf Country Club in Southern Pines.
"I was on pace for a 40 on the final nine holes before that par-5," Vance said. "It was a long hole. But the hole right after that, I finished with par, so it was nice to bounce back."
Her two-day score of 195 put Vance in a tie for 53rd place out of nearly 80 golfers.
Trailing by eight strokes after the opening day, West Henderson's team shot a 251 to finish with a 509 and win the state championship.
Salisbury took second with a 518 and Topsail (521) was third.
"It was a great experience," Vance said. " I enjoyed myself and I played well. I'm not completely happy with how the scores turned out, but I don't think that's any reflection on how I played."
The Greyhounds top player and winner of the Iredell County Championship, Vance was the only county golfer to qualify for the state championship. She wasn't alone at Longleaf, though.
Kathryn Palmes, another talented Greyhounds golfer who nearly qualified for the state championship herself, made the trip to support Vance.
"That was great," Vance said. "She's a very strong golfer and is going to be No. 1 in the conference next year. Next year is going to be her year to shine."
