News that "the cream of the crop" in college baseball will be playing in Statesville this summer is good for baseball fans and the city in general.

While the name is a nod to Statesville's past - the Statesville Owls have played here in one incarnation or another over the years from the 1930s to the 1960s - the team's presence can only say good things about the city's future.

Having one more sporting team to cheer on brings the community together, and gives Statesville another feather in its cap as somewhere people want to live and visit.

Plus, summer and baseball just belong together, and it will be great to see all our friends and neighbors at the 14 home games that will be played on the Statesville High School field.
