The only county golfer in any classification still playing, Statesville senior Kathryn Vance carded a 100 in Monday's opening round of the 1A/2A/3A state championship.
Vance struck the ball well and made good putts on the 5,618-yard Longleaf golf course, located in Southern Pines.
She shot a 47 on the front nine and a 53 on the back.
"I felt pretty good until the 17th hole," Vance said, speaking of the 500-yard par-5. "I had three really bad holes that killed my score, and that was one of them. Those three holes added 12 strokes to my score. That 17th was just a long hole.
"But I'm glad it's done with," Vance added. "It won't happen again (Tuesday)."
Salisbury leads the team competition with a score of 250.
On the Hornets' heels are West Henderson (258) and Topsail (261).
Kayla Scuipider of West Henderson leads the individual race by two strokes after carding a 74.
Vance tees off again at 9:10 a.m. today for the final round.
"I'm feeling pretty good," she said. "I wasn't as nervous as I was before regionals. Like I said, I was disappointed in those three holes, but I kept my head up and kept myself in it."
