The Second Fret is bringing some internationally known performers to downtown Statesville.

Al Stewart, a Scottish pop singer who reached a professional high-water mark in the mid-1970s, is slated to go unplugged at the Fret's Music Hall next Tuesday, Nov. 3.

And Artimus Pyle — who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 as the drummer for legendary band Lynyrd Skynyrd — will make a return to the Fret later in November.

In 1976, Scotland's Stewart became an AM radio staple with his airy pop song, "The Year of the Cat."

To prove he was no one-hit wonder, Stewart followed that two years later with the enigmatic "Time Passages," which spent 10 weeks occupying the No. 1 spot on Billboard's easy listening charts.

Both songs made it into the top-10 on Billboard's overall charts at the times of their respective releases.

"They were both huge songs, really huge songs," said the Second Fret's owner, Bob Barber. "But beside the stuff you've heard on the radio, he has some really great music. He's a phenomenal song writer."

But Barber said Stewart's Top10 songs make him a more recognizable performer.

"Al's probably the best-known act we've ever had," he said. "But Artimus is in the Hall of Fame, so it doesn't get much bigger than that."

Pyle, who survived the 1977 plane crash that killed Lynyrd Skynyrd bandmates Ronnie Van Zant, Cassie Gaines and Steve Gaines, first performed at the Fret last December.

"It was incredible," said Barber.

Barber said the gigs by the big names epitomize one of the goals he made for the Fret when he opened the coffee house and music hall last year.

"One of our dreams was to be the place the Al Stewarts and the Artimus Pyles could stop and play during the week when they were in between weekend shows in larger venues," Barber said.

Barber said about 40 tickets still remain for the Al Stewart show. Tickets are $15 each for the open-seating event.

Tickets are also available for Charlotte blues artist Robin Rogers' Nov. 6 show ($10 each) and rock-country-pop singer Mike Cross ($20 each), who will appear on Nov. 14.
