MOORESVILLE - It was a not a happy homecoming for Mallard Creek coach Dane Perry. His Mavericks were soundly defeated by Lake Norman 2-0 in a key I-Meck Conference showdown.

Perry coached the Wildcats to a state title in 2006 before leaving to take the helm at Mallard Creek, but his first game coaching on the visitor's sidelines at Wildcats' stadium was not a pleasant experience.

"We were manhandled," Perry said. "I was (at Lake Norman) and we had some good years. Tonight, my team just didn't show up."

The Wildcats, fighting for their playoff lives in the incredibly balanced I-Meck, controlled the early action with numerous shots on goal in the first 25 minutes.

"We've been having trouble scoring," Wildcats coach Jon Mertes said. "We hit the post three times and had another shot go just wide. I thought 'Here we go again,' then we finally got two into the back of the net."

Lake Norman broke through in the 28th minute on a spectacular header by Marcus Lohrman off a corner kick by Nicky Rembowski.

The Wildcats (12-6-2, 7-4 I-Meck) struck again in the 33rd minute.

Kevin Canevari made a perfect throw-in to Morgan Myslinski, whose header found the left corner of the net to give Lake Norman a 2-0 lead the defense made hold up.

Mertes said the Wildcats had no extra incentive in this matchup against their former coach.

"We didn't talk about that at all during the week," Mertes said. "We had our best week of practice last week. We also changed our system of play. We made some tactical changes."

Lake Norman's victory, coupled with Mooresville's loss to North Meck, creates a three-way tie for second place between the Wildcats, Blue Devils (13-5-1, 7-4) and Mavericks (13-7, 7-4).

The Wildcats conclude their regular season Wednesday at Mooresville, with a victory giving them second place.
