Even windy conditions and cool temperatures couldn't keep folks away from the 36th annual Carolina BalloonFest Sunday afternoon.

The field where the festivities were held was dotted with blankets and chairs as families enjoyed food from vendors and tossed footballs. Weaving throughout the crowds were children flying little, brightly colored pocket kites.

By the end of the day, though, the kites weren't the only things in the air.

After concerns about high winds throughout the day, the balloons were able to take off on Sunday evening, lifting off to cheers from the crowd.

The balloons may have been the main attraction, but families had a good time all day.

Vicky Hallenbeck brought along two hula hoops to keep herself entertained during the event, and wound up entertaining those around her as well.

"This is great," she said as she hula-hooped in time with the live band performing on stage. "I'm having a good time."

Sunday was Hallenbeck's first time at the BalloonFest. She came from Winston-Salem, along with her sister Donna Bodenheimer, and her husband, Mike, who had come in previous years.

"I like seeing the vendors, talking to people and meeting people," she said.

While Hallenbeck kept active, others took a different approach.

Donna and Mike sat at a table in front of the stage, taking in the sights of the day.

The couple made the 30-mile drive from Denver to attend the festival, and said it was well-worth the time in the car.

They enjoyed themselves.

"It's great," Donna said, then added, "I wish the weather was warmer."

This is the couple's third year being part of the BalloonFest, and their favorite part is enjoying the food.

By mid-afternoon they already sampled fried chips, a funnel cake, polish sausage and more.

"We're having a good time," Mike said. "There's good entertainment all around."

That entertainment ranged from wine tastings and crafts for adults to browse through to a Kid Zone with inflatables and a giant basketball hoop.
