Statesville's girls team blitzed through the North Piedmont Conference this season but couldn't quite pull off an upset in the first round of the 3A dual-team tennis playoffs.
After grabbing the conference's No. 2 seed, the Greyhounds hit the road and lost a tough 5-4 decision to undefeated Concord (15-0) last week.
"They were a very strong team," senior co-captain Azul Zapata said. "Our No. 1 and No. 6 players were the only two singles that won. I feel like, even if you have that really strong player at No. 1, and you have some consistent players in the middle and you win the majority of your matches based off that, that's kind of like the perfect dream team."
Concord's top player did give Greyhounds sophomore Ali Boggs some problems, but Boggs displayed great resiliency to win 6-2, 6-1 and give the Greyhounds a chance.
Trailing 4-2, Statesville won on the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles courts but couldn't pull off the doubles sweep needed to claim victory.
"Our No. 3 doubles team is not as experienced playing together," Zapata said. "They just have to get settled in, but I think they'll do very well in the future."
