West Iredell committed a pass interference penalty that gave West Wilkes its initial first down with fewer than two minutes remaining in the first quarter Friday.

Like it mattered – the score was 28-0 in favor of West Iredell by that point.

West Wilkes muffed two first-quarter kickoffs and the Warriors turned those turnovers into 14 points on its way to a 45-0 rout on homecoming night.

"When they turn the ball over, it's the offense's job to put points on the board and make the game much easier for our defense," Warriors running back L.J. Harper said.

West Iredell scored 17 points in the first half off West Wilkes turnovers. Bryson Shepherd nailed a 33-yard field goal after the Blackhawks fumbled their third kickoff, sending the Warriors to a 38-0 halftime lead.

The kick gave Shepherd a school record six made field goals in a season.

The Warriors would've liked to tack on another seven points, but "giving Bryson a chance to break the record wasn't a bad thing either," West Iredell coach Mark Weycker said. "He put it right down the middle."

The night really belonged to Harper and the Warriors defense, though.

West Iredell (4-5), which became playoff eligible by virtue of Friday's win, held the Blackhawks (2-7) to 62 total yards on offense.

Harper carried the ball 10 times for 130 yards and four touchdowns. He scored on runs of 3, 13, 6 and 55 yards.

"Offensive line blocked well," Harper said. "I had to make something happen."

Added Weycker, "We ran the trap well. Our guards really blew some people up."

Sayer Robinson added touchdown runs of 25 yards and 1 yard for the Warriors.

With the game well in hand for West Iredell, the clock ran continuously for most of the second half.

"At this point in the season, it's been a grind," Weycker said. "We've had our ups and downs. This was a fun night for our team. This is what we needed. The thing is to carry it over into the next two weeks."
