Vietnam veteran Dale Wilson was honored in Troutman on Sunday with the attention and adoration typically reserved for true American heroes.
And he deserved every second of it.
And then some.
Wilson, who lost both legs and his right arm as a result of injuries he suffered on Feb. 19, 1970, while serving as a Marine in Vietnam, is the 2009 Outstanding Disabled Veteran of the Year.
During a ceremony at Troutman Baptist Church on Sunday, those who know, respect and love Wilson assembled to let this brave Marine know how much he means to them.
He was presented with the Long Leaf Pine Award, the highest award a civilian can receive in North Carolina, and many other honors.
Those who know Wilson best, including U.S. Sen. Jim Webb, were proud to extol his many virtues.
Pete Meletis of the Marine Corps League may have summed up the sentiments of those present when he said, "I cherish all the represents as a person and as a man of faith."
Like many others, we're moved by the example that Dale Wilson has set for the rest of us by the life he has led. He is a true inspiration to all Americans.
