Statesville senior Kathryn Vance is going to states.
This time, there's no doubt about it.
Vance learned Tuesday afternoon that officials for the 1A/2A/3A Central Regional would not let Burlington Williams player Mary Kirkland replay the 18th hole.
Kirkland finished with a 105 after Monday's regional event to miss qualifying for the state championship by three strokes.
She petitioned to replay the 18th hole, saying her score was affected due to darkness. Kirkland shot an eight on the par-four 18th.
Tournament officials concluded that because Kirkland played the hole, signed her scorecard and turned it in, the original score would stand.
That left Vance, who shot a 102, in as an individual.
"I'm obviously really happy," Vance said. "It's what I wanted as a senior, and to make it after the way I played on the front-nine ... I felt very relieved when I heard."
Vance shot eight strokes better on the back nine, and putted well. Her iron play was also spot-on in leading her to the state championship.
She'll be the only county golfer playing in the 1A/2A/3A state championship.
"My putting kept me in it this year," Vance said. "That was nice because my putting kept me out of it last season."
