Preston Fox stepped up to the challenge at Monday's Catawba Valley Athletic Association cross country championship.
Setting the pace for the Vikings, Fox clocked in at 20 minutes, 19 seconds to finish 18th overall.
It was the best finish for the Vikings, who scored 119 points to edge Newton-Conover (120) points for fourth place.
Brannigan Barker again was the catalyst on the girls side.
Her time of 23:26 put her 13th overall. Mattie Williams (23:56) was 17th as the Vikings were seventh as a team with 128 points, just two points behind Bandys.
