Statesville senior Kathryn Vance shot a 102 at Monday's regional event to qualify as an individual for the state championship.

Probably.

A weird ending to a long day, though, means Vance and the Greyhounds won't officially know anything until sometime today.

"I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight I'm so nervous," Vance said with a chuckle on Monday evening.

Vance's 102 was the cut-off for making the state championship.

But an unidentified golfer who teed off late played the 18th hole near dark. She finished the hole, but will petition the state association to replay it today due to darkness.

"Unless the state makes a different decision, Kathryn has qualified," Greyhounds coach Sue Isaacs said. "We feel it will stand, but we just won't know for sure until (today)."

Scores were high all the way around on a long course in cold, windy conditions at Statesville Country Club, site of the 1A/2A/3A Central Regional.

With a humongous field of more than 30 teams, Vance waited more than four hours after her final hole to learn if she made it to states.

And not having an answer left her feeling nervous.

"I was so happy I finally made it as a senior," Vance said. "But it got to be kind of nerve-wracking at the same time, because I don't really feel like I'm in yet."

North Iredell senior Logan Fox played one of her best rounds of the year, but came just short of making states.

Fox finished with a 103, just one stroke back.

"She was kind of disappointed because she of course would have liked to make states her senior year," Raiders coach Tami Ramsey said. "But she played so well. We looked at some of the other scores some of the top golfers had, and we saw that 103 was really good. She was bummed out about not making it, but pretty happy with her score."

Fox carded a nine on two holes, which really isn't that bad considering the circumstances.

Ramsey said on one hole, the green was perilously close to a water hazard. They were delayed a bit because every person in the group in front of them hit the water.

"It was really tough," Ramsey said. "Some of the pin placements were atrocious. They were rough."

For Statesville, Rachel Soltysiak shot a 108 for the Greyhounds' second lowest score.

"All the girls played really good," Vance said. "Kathryn Palmes did really well until the 18th. Rachel had a really good day for being a sophomore. She'll definitely make it next year."
