TROUTMAN - Draughn won the coin toss Friday, deferred the ball until the second half, and it wasn't long before it was playing catch-up the rest of the way.

South Iredell marched 74 yards in eight plays after the opening kickoff to score on Quataye Smyre's 12-yard run, and the Vikings coasted to a 30-0 Catawba Valley Athletic Conference victory over the winless Wildcats on homecoming night.

South (4-4, 3-1 CVAC) bounced back after turnover-plagued loss the previous week at Maiden that took it out of a tie for first place in the conference.

"Last week, it was a tough one," South running back Quincy Davenport said. "We got to practice this week and focused on holding onto the ball."

Davenport held onto the ball 19 times against Draughn (0-7, 0-3 CVAC) and turned his carries into 180 yards, including a three-yard touchdown late in the first quarter that gave South a 14-0 lead.

"He's definitely a workhorse right now," South coach Ed Masterton said. "He busts it up the middle, and it opens up our outside game."

Tyrell Mattox added 61 yards on seven carries, and quarterback Cory Powell scored twice from the 1-yard line as the Vikings reached four wins to become playoff eligible.

South led 21-0 at the half, and it could've been uglier for the Wildcats, but their defense stopped the Vikings twice on downs inside the Draughn 40.

Draughn held South on downs five times total, but it didn't offset how badly they were outgained.

The Vikings finished with 376 total yards compared to the Wildcats' 65.

"Teams underestimate our defense because of our size, but we have some speed," Davenport said.

It was South's third shutout of the season.

"They're playing well," Masterton said of his defense. "Hopefully they can continue. We're getting into the teeth of the CVAC now, and we're going to have to bring it on defense every single night."
