West Iredell kicker Bryson Shepherd tied the school record for made field goals in a season when he connected on his two kicks in the Warriors' 33-13 win over North Iredell last Friday.

Shepherd's 33-yard field goal in the second quarter gave West a 17-0 halftime lead and his 26-yarder in the third quarter pushed the Warriors' advantage to 20-0.

The senior now has five made field goals on the season, matching former West Iredell standout Josh Hoke, who had a productive college career at Coastal Carolina.

"They both had a great work ethic," West coach Mark Weycker said. "Both really worked at improving their leg strength. They both had a very positive kicker's mentality, where they could block things out and they could get out there and get their job done."

Shepherd is 5-for-8 on field goal attempts this season. He made a career-long 40-yarder against Lake Norman.

Two of his misses were the result of blocked kicks.

"He would have broken the record much sooner if we could protect a little better," Weycker said. "He's had a lot of opportunities just because we've had to take more field goal opportunities than we usually do as a football program. Fortunately, he is doing a good job with that."
