A Yadkinville man was arrested on a charge of trafficking in heroin after a traffic stop Tuesday on U.S. Interstate 77.

Claudio Chavarin-Cardenas, 47, of Yadkinville was stopped by members of the Iredell County Sheriff's Office Interstate Criminal Enforcement unit (ICE) for a traffic infraction on I-77 southbound.

A search of Chavarin-Cardenas' 2000 Honda Odyssey van was conducted.

Sheriff Phil Redmond said deputies located approximately 284 grams of black tar heroin with an estimated street value of $57,000. It was believed that the heroin was being transported from outside of North Carolina to Charlotte.

This is one of the single largest heroin seizures in Iredell County history, Redmond said.

Chavarin-Carendas was charged with multiple counts of trafficking heroin and is being held in the Iredell County Detention Center in lieu of a $250,000 bond.

Three teens charged in connection with break-in

Three teens are facing charges in connection with the break-in of a vehicle at North Iredell High School last weekend.

Nathan Howard, 17, and Jacob Nastally, 16, and a 15-year-old juvenile are all charged with three counts of breaking and entering, three counts of larceny after breaking and entering and injury to personal property.

Iredell County Sheriff Phil Redmond said Deputy Reggie Allen, the school resource officer at North, received information about a break-in that happened Oct. 6.

Allen and detectives with the sheriff's office spoke with a juvenile, who said he and another student were responsible for the break-in Oct. 6, as well as an incident in July when $2,500 in damage was done to the concession stand at the school.

Detectives learned the identity of the other students involved in the incidents and charged them as well.

The investigation is continuing.
