Iredell County Finance Director Susan Blumenstein was recently named the top executive of a state organization for those in her position.
Blumenstein was elevated to the presidency of the North Carolina Association of County Finance Officers at the group's convention in New Bern earlier this month.
"I'm glad to be able to represent Iredell County," Blumenstein said. "It's an honor and I'm glad to do it."
Blumenstein said the association is in place to help finance officers with issues unique to county fiscal management.
"There are a lot of differences between counties' and municipalities' financial matters," she said. "This is geared toward the counties."
Blumenstein said one of her jobs as president will be to increase association membership. She said the group's conference, while one of its most informative ones, was also one of its least attended in several years.
"Everybody is hurting financially," she said. "And when funding is low, training is one of the first things to go."
Blumenstein said another thing the association does is advocate for counties in state legislative matters.
"It helps to have someone sit in on those meetings," she said. "Because sometimes legislators don't understand the impact that some of the things they do can have on the counties."
Iredell County Manager Joel Mashburn applauded Blumenstein in her new role.
"I think it's an honor for her and the county," Mashburn said. "And it's well-deserved. Susan is highly respected throughout the state."
Blumenstein has been with Iredell County since 1985. She was hired by former Finance Director Bill Furches, who also once served as the president of the NCAOFO.
Blumenstein has been in her current position with the county since 1990.
Her term as president of the association is one year.
