With the help of the Iredell County Sheriff's Office, Kannapolis police were able to track the whereabouts of a missing 18-month-old child believed to be in need of medical care.
Kannapolis police initially responded to a missing child report at 364 Village Park Road, where the child's mother told officers the child was with the biological father, according to Capt. Patrick Patty. Through additional interviews, police determined that information was not correct, but where then unable to locate the mother for additional questioning.
The initial report indicated that the child might be traveling in a rental car equipped with a vehicle locater system (GPS), Patty said. Kannapolis police contacted the GPS company, which was able to track the vehicle from Mooresville to Statesville.
Iredell County Sheriff's Office deputies stopped the vehicle on Interstate 40 and detained one person, who was brought back to Kannapolis for questioning, according to Patty. The child's mother was located in Concord and also returned for Kannapolis for further questioning.
The child was taken to an area hospital, where a medical screening showed no signs of injuries during the incident, according to Patty.
The Rowan County Department of Social Service has been contacted and is working in conjunction with the Kannapolis Police Department in the investigation.
The case is ongoing.
