Hoping to help more animals throughout the county, the Humane Society of Iredell will host its first Paw Festival later this month.

On Oct. 24, a variety of activities – including a yard sale and fun for the kids – will help raise funds for the many homeless and fostered pets across the region.

Held at the adoption center in Mooresville – 110 Robinson Road, near Big Daddy's restaurant on N.C. 150 – the rain-or-shine event kicks off at 7 a.m. with a yard sale and concludes at 3 p.m., also featuring children's activities, starting at 10 a.m., and a Port-A-Pit chicken dinner at 11 a.m.

"We're just hoping for a very successful turnout from this event," said Director Juli Reed. "It's the first time we've done anything like this and we hope it becomes an annual event."

Donations for the yard sale will be accepted at the adoption center in Mooresville – open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday – through Oct. 23, though Reed said organizers are not accepting clothing of any kind. Donors are welcome to attend the yard sale and sell their own items, though all proceeds will benefit the Humane Society.

Tickets for the Port-A-Pit dinner are $8 each and can be purchased in advance also at the adoption center, said Reed.

The children's activities, she noted, are free and will include inflatables and games to make the event as family-friendly as possible.

"We want to be very welcoming to everybody, so why not cater to the kids, too?" she said.

She added that incorporating children was an important element when discussing what activities would make up the first Paw Festival.

"We really believe in the youth of today becoming the future for the animals,' she said.
