Officials identified the victims from Sunday's multiple shooting in Mooresville as a man, his wife and two grown sons.
Douglas Alan Thomas and Linda Malone Thomas, both 57, were found dead inside their Peninsula Drive home Sunday morning.
Their two grown sons, Christian Edward Thomas, 25, and Douglas Alan Thomas Jr., 28, were wounded, and are listed in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center.
Both of the men also lived at the Peninsula Drive home.
Capt. Darren Campbell of the Iredell County Sheriff's Office said there was evidence that one of the two dead inside the residence was killed with a self-inflicted wound.
He said the investigation is still continuing, but at this point, the evidence indicates it was a murder-suicide.
A handgun was recovered from inside the residence, Campbell said.
The sheriff's office responded to the residence, which is off Stutts Road, off Brawley School Road, around 8:05 a.m.
Campbell said deputies responded and didn't initially locate anything. The house was locked, but deputies heard cries for help from inside.
He said deputies entered the residence by force and found Linda and Doug Thomas dead, and the two sons wounded.
Both of the young men were airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
He said authorities learned that Doug Thomas Sr. was laid off from his job at the University of North Carolina Charlotte in August.
Campbell said authorities have not been able to speak with either of the two sons as both were in surgery Sunday and were under sedation Monday.
One of the final steps in the investigation will be the autopsies of Douglas Alan Thomas Sr. and his wife.
Those autopsies are scheduled for today at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
