Various agencies are uniting to call attention to the importance of afterschool programs with the Lights on Afterschool celebration.

The event, now in its sixth year and open to local youth and their families, is slated for 6 p.m. Oct. 22 at Harris Park and Christian Outreach Ministries. It will include free food, games, door prizes, pumpkin decorating and carving, face painting, dance contests, athletic activities and informational booths.

Several community leaders are scheduled to speak during the event, including Iredell-Statesville Schools Interim Superintendent Brady Johnson, Statesville Housing Authority Executive Director David Meachem and Christian Outreach Pastor Glenn Usry. Youths will also speak on the impact afterschool programs have had on their lives.

A fireworks display will conclude the event at 8:15 p.m. at the park.

Prior to the celebration, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the newly renovated Dobson Street Community Center at 5:15 p.m. The center will house Appropriate Placement Options and Success Helps All Kids Excel (SHAKE) students. After the ribbon cutting, a parade will make its way from the Dobson Street Community Center to the Lights on Afterschool celebration.
