The new surgical units at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center are expected to improve care and the quantity of patients surgeons can treat.

The hospital debuted its 12-bed orthopedic, spinal and neurosurgery unit and its 18-bed surgical area Thursday.

The two divisions will open within the next couple of weeks and increase the number of patient beds at LNRMC to 123.

The units on the second floor of the medical office building adjoining the hospital feature private rooms, patient education classrooms and rehabilitation services.

Orthopedic Spine Surgeon Dr. Ken Wood said he was blown away when he saw the new facility.

"What we do is complex," he said. "It requires a specific level of expertise in our nursing and rehabilitation care."

Neurosurgeon Dr. Jeffrey Yablon said it is convenient to have all of the patients in a single location. He said the unit will help doctors and nurses work to increase efficiency and quality of care.

The new therapy room offers a walkway to help patients walk on different surfaces, such as carpet, gravel, stone and brick. It also has a kitchen, an eating area and a bathroom.

Rehabilitation Services Director Kevin Kucko said the members of the physical and occupational therapy team wanted a space where they could equip patients with the skills to be independent
LNRMC Board of Trustees Chairman Randy Marion said he wasn't sure of the exact dollar amount Health Management Associates spent, but he knows it is in the millions.

"This is going to improve the community we live in," he said.
