Looking for fun, free ways to keep your kids entertained this fall? From regular story times to special events, the Iredell County and Mooresville libraries have plenty of activities planned.

Halloween is fast approaching, and the Mooresville Public Library is has several ways for kids to get in the spooky spirit.

"We're doing 'Spooky Tales' with storyteller Bobbie Pell, who is returning to read her book, 'Scary Stories: Spooky Tales for Telling Out Loud,' " said Susan Virzi, library associate. "We're also doing a costume contest, and kids just love that each year. We'll have prizes for the cutest and the most creative."

Mr. Marvel will be putting on a Halloween Magic Show at the Iredell County Public Library on 5:30 pm Oct. 26, said Youth Services Librarian Reitha Morrison.

In November, kids of all ages can take "A Walk in the Woods," right in the Mooresville library, sponsored by the Environmental Education Company. Children can learn about North Carolina water and wildlife, venomous reptiles, plants and animals, as well as see an Eastern Box Turtle up close. Space is limited, so parents are encouraged to register in advance.

December will bring the return of Mrs. Claus, an annual favorite.

"This has become a really big deal for the kids, and parents are more than welcome to bring their camera so they can snap a picture," Virzi said. "The kids will have stories read to them and they can talk with Mrs. Claus."

The library is also continuing "Make It, Take It," for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

For the older set, the Iredell County library is gearing back up for its Girl Talk group, with an open house planned for Oct. 15 from 6-7:30 p.m. Girl Talk is intended for girls ages 11-17 and covers topics like self-esteem, relationships, respect and peer pressure.

For younger children, library assistant Lisa McBroom said the Iredell County library's story and play times are very popular.

"It's a great opportunity because it's free and quality family time," she said.

The library also holds a Spanish story time on the first Friday of each month, which is a bilingual story time sponsored by the Iredell County Partnership for Young Children.

For parents looking for reading ideas, McBroom suggested Eric Carle books, Dr. Seuss, "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs."

"The classics, like Dr. Seuss, are always pretty popular," she said. "The younger children love theme books, like for seasons or holidays, very topical things."

Virzi suggested the "Fancy Nancy" series and "Purplicious," "Pinkalicious" or "Goldilicious." Elementary school age kids are enjoying "39 Clues," which she said are a big hit because they are interactive online.
