LUMBERTON
Boosters of North Carolina's horse industry are making their case in rural communities that taxpayer money would increase jobs in a field already expanding.
Regional meetings to discuss the equine industry's economic impact were being held Tuesday in Lumberton and Thursday in Williamston. A similar meeting was held last week in Rockingham County.
The Rural Economic Development Center's study found that trading, raising, and training horses, mules and donkeys generated nearly $2 billion in business statewide.
The study released in May said it is the first to estimate the equine industry's economic role in North Carolina.
State lawmakers next year will consider creating a state commission for promoting and expanding the industry.
