Exercise your right to vote

Statesville City Council candidate Brian Pickrell made the most profound statement at the recent candidates forum.
His remarks had nothing to do with the downtown redevelopment plan, the property tax rate or the wisdom of using taxpayer money to build and operate a fitness center.
Pointing to a homemade display honoring American military personnel, Pickrell instead discussed the importance of honoring their service and sacrifice.
One of the best ways to do that is by exercising your right to vote, a right that has been preserved for more than 235 years by our brave men and women in the armed services.
Statesville residents have a chance to do that again on Tuesday when they head to the polls to vote in the mayoral and council elections.
In recent municipal elections, less than 20 percent of registered voters have decided these races.
Let's try to do better this time around.
