R&L failed to do homework before printing endorsement

Published: October 3, 2009

I am shocked at the level of laziness the R&L has reached when it comes to endorsing political candidates. In the Sept. 30 edition, the R&L endorsed my opponent in the mayor's race, Costi Kutteh, without asking me one question about the race.

When I worked at the R&L in the 1990s, I remember political candidates meeting with the editorial board. The board would ask questions of the candidates and then decide whom to endorse. That's the responsible thing for a newspaper to do.

In your endorsement, you state "Mr. Bumgarner has failed to demonstrate a basic understanding of how city government works."

If you had bothered to ask me, I would have told you I majored in political science and graduated with honors. I understand how city government works better than the journalism and business majors on the R&L editorial board.

Who you endorse is your business. How you arrive at that endorsement lies at the heart of your journalistic mission.

Just because you choose to be lazy does not give you the right to call me stupid.

Editor's note: For this endorsement, we considered the candidates' previous political experience and service to the community, their responses to questions at the local candidates forum (during which a member of the editorial board asked the candidates questions), and the candidates' answers to questions posed during interviews by our reporting staff. We also reviewed Mr. Bumgarner's many statements about his qualifications in his own publication. We stand by our endorsement.
