More than $30,000 in cash was found in two hidden compartments inside a car that was stopped on Interstate 77 in Iredell County.
Iredell County Sheriff deputies on the Interstate Criminal Enforcement Team stopped a 2003 Nissan 350Z heading south near mile marker 57 around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday for improper display of their license plate.
After issuing a warning ticket, deputies requested a search after noting a number of criminal indicators, deputies said.
Deputies said a K-9 dog smelled drugs from the exterior of the car after the two men inside denied a request to search the vehicle. Deputies found the hidden compartments with $30,300 in cash behind the passenger and driver's seats. They seized an additional $6,860 from the driver and the vehicle.
Neither the driver or the passenger were arrested or charged at this point.
The investigation is still underway.
