Resources for many things new parents might need, from tips on nutrition to lessons in infant massage, will be available on Oct. 6, when Iredell Memorial will host its 16th annual Baby Fair from 2-8 p.m. at the Statesville Civic Center.

"The event just gets bigger and bigger every year. Parents can interact with other parents and everyone there has babies in common, so they can learn from each other in casual conversation," said Pam Speight, RN and Birth Place program nurse. "It's not just for people who had their babies at Iredell Memorial — it truly is a community event and part of our hospital outreach program."

The fair, which is a collaborative effort between the hospital, the Health Department and Smart Start, will include exhibits, door prizes, refreshments and a free gift. Throughout the event, 30-minute sessions on infant massage, car seat safety, healthy eating and organic baby food, financial planning, prenatal and postnatal exercise and baby sign language will be available.

"The sessions allow moms to be able to see a lot of different agencies in the community that they might not be aware of and see the services they provide," Speight said.

The event typically gets about 400 people and Speight said she is looking forward to it.

Speight said she hopes parents will leave with more knowledge on how to take care of their baby and to help with starting a new family.

"Some of the people who come are pregnant or are planning for the future, so they can also get some questions answered," she added.

Speight said seeing the hundreds of people who come through the fair each year is one of her favorite parts of the event.

"I love to see and talk to the people we've helped through the childbirth process," she said. "I love seeing the babies and love to see people we had contact with during pregnancy and had the privilege to care during and after delivery."

Registration is not required, but is appreciated.
