After years in the business, Lester Chambers closed his bookshop on West Broad Street in Statesville in 2002.
He enjoyed the book business, but at that time, health problems intervened.
Now healthier, Chambers says he is looking forward to re-entering the world of books and authors.
Chambers will hold a grand opening of Lester's Bookshop from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and continuing from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday at 320 Signal Hill Drive behind the Cozumel Mexican Restaurant.
"I look forward to greeting old customers as well as meeting new ones," he said.
Chambers said that in addition to fine and rare books, he plans to serve and sell fine imported teas.
He will also have a variety of pastries for sale supplied by Ketchie Creek Bakery and Cafe in Mocksville.
Fine tea is not Chambers' only British passion: He is a Sherlock Holmes buff.
"Holmes is the most well-known fictional character in the world. There are many things I admire about his character, as written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, chief of which is that Holmes is an example of a Victorian gentleman," Chambers said.
Chambers and his wife have been to London three or four times and have been to the Sherlock Holmes Museum there. Chambers has a section of his shop dedicated to "the world's first consulting detective," furnished and decorated to resemble the 221-B Baker Street digs of Holmes and his associate, Dr. Watson.
Assisting Chambers in the shop will be Marvin Conner, who will head the shop's Internet book sales.
Regular bookshop hours will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
