Board's pick makes sense

The Iredell-Statesville Schools Board of Education's decision to name Brady Johnson superintendent came as a welcome surprise.

During his career as an educator, deputy superintendent and interim superintendent, Johnson has earned the respect of his colleagues and parents in the district. He has roots in our community and knows firsthand the strengths and weaknesses of the local school system.

After the decision was announced, Johnson said he "wants to continue the good work that's been done."

In our book that can only be a good thing.

In his seven years as superintendent, Terry Holliday created some big shoes to fill, leading I-SS to the ranks of the state's elite public school districts in many measures of academic performance.

While his methods were often controversial, Holliday's leadership helped make education in Iredell County markedly better than it was before he arrived. It is our hope that Johnson will build on that foundation, adding his own vision on improving our schools.

Doing so will be a challenge, as the district continues to struggle with reduced funding due to the economic recession.

The school board could have brought in some top national talent to steer the district through these tough waters, but finding a captain with Johnson's experience and local knowledge would have been a tough task.
