A quick 'thanks'

For the Statesville firefighters, it was just another day at the office.

But for a young mother who came home to a house full of smoke on Monday morning, it was a scary situation.

The fire on Kelly Street turned out to be a small one - on the stove - and it was easily extinguished.

But the entire incident, one of countless calls Statesville firefighters and their counterparts across Iredell County respond to every year with little fanfare or public attention, should bring great comfort to all Statesville residents.

Within moments of being dispatched after the 911 call, Lt. Stuart Wells, Firefighter Gregory Lambach, Firefighter Steven Estes and Capt. Jeff Matheson were on the scene and acted with both compassion and professionalism.

They took the time to reassure the crying mother that everything was OK, flushed smoke from the house and tried to make the whole thing seem less frightening for the small children watching from across the street. They even took the time for a quick tour of the fire truck.

It's not the kind of story that makes front-page news. The firefighters say they are just doing their jobs.

Luckily for all of us, they do them extremely well.
