Brady Johnson has been named the Iredell-Statesville Schools superintendent after serving more than three months in the position on an interim basis.
The I-SS Board of Education introduced Johnson as the district's lead administrator in a surprise move during Monday night's regular monthly meeting.
"I'm honored the board offered this to me," Johnson said. "I will work extremely hard to not disappoint."
Johnson takes over as the full-time replacement for Terry Holliday, who left the district earlier this year after seven years to become the education commissioner of Kentucky.
Information on Johnson's salary wasn't immediately available.
During Monday's meeting, Board Chairman David Cash deviated from the agenda and went into an impromptu speech about the ideal qualifications the community believes the next superintendent should have.
The information was gathered from numerous advisory meetings in which stakeholders gave input on the characteristics the new leader should possess.
The school board had not posted the vacant superintendent position because it was waiting for feedback from the community before doing so, Cash said.
Cash said that after reviewing recommendations, the board learned stakeholders wanted someone who was experienced, had an open-door policy, was visible in the schools and community, was highly respected and trustworthy and focused on student learning, among many other things.
Cash said the board immediately saw the trust people have in Johnson, and that "solidified our thinking."
"I feel more comfortable with this decision than with any other major decision I've made since being on the board," he said.
While there are no major changes on the horizon for the district under Johnson's leadership, he said there are a few items on his radar.
He intends to spearhead the process of modification of the district's model and garner input from teachers about classroom practices.
"You want to make sure you do the best by these kids, their parents and my colleagues," Johnson said. "You want to continue the good work that's been done."
Board member John Rogers Jr. said Johnson is a great choice.
"He has all the qualifications we need for the school system," he said. "We're going to be in good shape."
