Community Thanksgiving Dinner returns for a 5th year

The Mooresville Christian Mission will host its fifth annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner later this month, offering families who cannot afford the traditional meal a welcoming place to enjoy the holiday's festivities.
Held on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, the meal will be served between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Those dining in can enjoy their holiday dinner at First Baptist Church, 150 S. Church St. Take-out meals will be available at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Perth Road.
"Thanksgiving is a luxury at this point for a lot of families," said Valerie Chamberlain, executive director of the Mission, noting that the current economy has left many families struggling to simply make ends meet.
The Mission, she added, has been distributing nearly 28,000 pounds of food per month to families in need in the Mooresville area. Chamberlain said she anticipates a higher need as well for this year's Thanksgiving dinner.
"Because of the economy, we expect to have a larger crowd this year," she said. "We've been raising money throughout the year for this, but we just anticipate a higher need."
Last year, more than 1,400 meals were served on Thanksgiving at four different Mooresville locations, with deliveries to shut-ins.
The celebration, however, relies entirely on donations from the community, local churches, businesses and individuals. Chamberlain noted that 100 percent of the monies raised goes directly to the dinner.
Volunteers are also a major component in a successful celebration, she noted. Last year, over 250 people donated their time to make the event possible.
