On Oct. 1, the Statesville Montessori Middle School launched a canned food drive to benefit Iredell Christian Ministries.
Throughout the month, the sixth, seventh and eighth graders engaged in a friendly competition to see who could donate the most cans.
This week the eighth grade loaded more than 600 pounds of food to deliver to Iredell Christian Ministries.
"We took it upon ourselves as a challenge to see if we could amass hundreds of cans of food (and) overall it was very successful," said Joanne Dodick, an eighth grade teacher and coordinator for the food drive at Montessori.
The students said they felt honored to help others.
"I feel better in that I gave back to my community." said seventh grader Ally Hall.
The students were given the opportunity to tour Iredell Christian Ministries and see how the food is distributed to those in need.
Natalie Rickabaugh, the facility's director, said ICM has seen a 25 percent increase in clients over the past two years. The organization gives away approximately two hundred cans of food a day — that's almost 20,000 pounds of food a month.
"It takes the whole community to help these people," Rickabaugh said. "One or two individuals or agencies don't do this. It takes the whole community and Statesville has done a wonderful job."
Statesville Montessori is planning to make the canned food drive a more frequent event and they've already begun their next act of community service, a drive for socks, jackets and other warm clothing.
