Electric Smyre taking bigger role in offense

Sophomore Quataye Smyre was a wide receiver as a freshman and manned the same position entering the 2009 season, but he's been shuffled around the lineup.
With his blazing speed, South Iredell football coaches have used Smyre all over the field in an effort to get the ball in his hands.
Now more of a wingback, Smyre has rushed for more than 300 yards on fewer than 40 carries this season.
His 8.5 yards-per-carry average is tops in the county as well.
"He's earning some more playing time," Vikings coach Ed Masterton said. "He's definitely a young, athletic kid who's still trying to learn his way around. He's going to be seeing a lot more time for us. He's been doing some really good things."
Smyre's best line of the year is a five-carry, 108-yard performance.
Two of his four rushing touchdowns have come from at least 60 yards out, and he's always a threat on kickoff and punt returns, too.
Smyre and the rest of the ground game will need to be on point Friday when South hosts East Burke (7-3) in the season finale.
"They play good, solid football and we're going to have play well," Masterton said. " ... Right now we have four wins. That could be playoff-eligible, or it might not. Certainly if we could win that last one it would solidify us."
