The face of Mooresville government changed dramatically Tuesday, as political newcomer Chris Montgomery narrowly ousted two-term mayor Bill Thunberg and Rhett Dusenbury soundly defeated At-Large Commissioner Frank Rader.
With all precincts reporting, Montgomery led Thunberg by 16 votes – 1,063 to 1,047 in unofficial tallies. A small number of provisional ballots were to be counted this morning, but they are not expected to change the vote outcome.
It was unclear whether Thunberg would challenge the vote totals or whether there will be a recount.
Dusenbury's victory over first-term commissioner Rader was much more decisive than the mayor's race. Dusenbury collected 1,245 votes to Rader's 795.
Four other seats on the ballot were filled, all by unopposed incumbents. Town commissioners Mac Herring (Ward 3) and Chris Carney (Ward 4) won re-election as did Mooresville Graded School District Board of Education members Karen Hart and Nancy Cross.
